In 2017 Moldovan producers won at least 362 medals at various international competitions. This is more than double the results of the previous year.
It is necessary to make a clarification that the NOVW calculated the total number of awards on the basis of information received from the producers, and he obtained 328. On closer examination of the list, it turned out that many companies, among their achievements, forgot to mention the medals received at the Moldovan international competition – Black Sea Region Wines & Spirits Contest 2017, and some of the winners of this contest were not taken into account at all (maybe they did not provide the data on NOVW). I counted 20 such loss-medals. Perhaps there were some more contests that I don’t know about. That is, the lower threshold – is 348 awards (later this figure has increased by 14 and 362 turned out).

It turns out that last year was marked by the award-winning wines and divines 41 companies. The champion was the company Fautor, in whose assets 51 medals, of which 26 – gold. Also in the top three included Vinaria-Purcari (49 awards) and Chateau Vartely (32 + 14 = 46 awards). When the article was published, I received information from the company Chateau Vartely that they missed 14 of their medals. So I had to make changes in red. If someone else finds their lost victories, please contact.
What was the stimulus?
This rich harvest of achievements is due to the fact that since 2016 the strategic partner of the industry – the Moldova Competitiveness Project (funded by USAID and the Government of Sweden) supports domestic enterprises in their participation in international competitions. According to the project’s vice-director Diana Lazar, this is done to actually confirm the qualitative leap achieved by the industry in the last three to four years. This program, designed for a year, includes seven-eight contests with an international reputation. The list of competitions was compiled together with specialists from the NOVW and the local and international experts. The support is provided on a “1 + 1” basis, for each sample that supports the project, the manufacturer must register and pay at least one more.

-Our objective is not to subsidize the investments of enterprises, but to motivate them to submit more samples for competitions,” says Diana Lazar. That the program involved, as much as possible, more wineries, there are quotas for support, our project pays no more than two samples per contest, and no more than eight applications for all competitions. The program has its own rules to ensure transparency and make sure that the samples submitted for the competitions correspond to what is understood by the unique proposal (it is defined in the Framework Program for Marketing and Promotion of Moldovan Wines). This means that the advantage is enjoyed by wines from local varieties of grapes, blends and wines from certain varieties, which, according to international experts, are very good in Moldova.
Thus, in 2016 we paid for the registration of more than 70 samples. Due to this, manufacturers had to submit for various competitions, at least 140 wines. Due to this, manufacturers had to submit for various competitions, at least 140 wines. In total, according to our monitoring, Moldovan enterprises registered about 215 samples, two thirds of which (175 pieces) received awards. In 2017, we joined forces with the NOVW and, as a result, the list of contests increased. It included specialized competitions focused on certain types of wines, for example, Effervescents du Monde, Mondial du Rose, and also competitions in the target markets – in Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic. In total, 280 samples were submitted to the competitions last year by common efforts, as a result of which Moldovan producers won 284 awards, – Diana Lazar noted.
Contests that were selected for the support program in 2017: Challenge International du Vin (France), Concurs mondial de Bruxelles (Belgium), Decanter Asia Wine Awards (Hong Kong), Decanter World Wine Awards, International Wine & Spirit Competition, International Wine Challenge (UK), Mundus Vini Spring tasting и Mundus Vini Summer tasting.
NOVW paid for participation in competitions:Galicja Vitis (Poland), Le Mondial du Rose (France), International Wine Contest Bucharest (Romania), Czech International Wine Competition (Oenoforum, Czech Republic) and Effervescentes du monde (France).
The question arises about the Moldovan competition – why was it not included in the support program? It turns out that donors are considering a local competition as part of a program to develop the home market.
