Two years ago, the National Office of Vine and Wine assembled two expert groups to define the aromatic profile of Feteasca Regală wines. At the time, it was noted that the variety had not yet been fully characterized, as not all samples displayed the muscat nuances considered typical.

I set out to form my own opinion of Feteasca Regală wines in Moldova by assembling a tasting of a dozen wines from different vintages (2016–2020), including a small vertical from a single producer.

Looking ahead, I should note that some of my conclusions diverge from conventional views.

Carpe Diem Feteasca Regală 2020 (Casa Vinicolă Luca)

Pale straw color with brilliance. The wine is straw-colored and shimmering. The initial nose is floral and fruity. The aroma reveals the sweetness of ripe fruit, honey flowers (a blooming meadow on a summer day), quince, baked apple, hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, dried apricots, and orange zest.

The ripe aromas suggested a fairly high alcohol content, but it only reached 11%, as a drought year halted the sugar accumulation of this variety on that plot. In 2020, he harvested only 800 kg of grapes from his 1.5 hа, making the resulting wine practically worth its weight in gold. It’s just hitting the market; I tasted it without a label.

Because the berries contained little juice, it was very concentrated and darker than usual. This also affected the wine’s color, which is a bright, light yellow with brilliance. The first nose is ripe fruit. The aroma reveals candied fruit, dried herbs, quince, apple, and apricot kernel.

The taste reveals a pleasant, refreshing acidity (I was surprised that the vibrant acidity was preserved despite the extreme drought and heat), almond notes, and apricot kernel flavors, which continues through the finish, permeating every aspect of the wine. Its foaming qualities are especially noteworthy. When poured, it produced an excellent mousse – a tall head – in a wine glass, not a flute. It held up well, reaching 3-4 cm. I’ve never seen anything like this with sparkling wines in a wine glass. Even in a flute, the foam quickly disappears. Some have said that Feteasca Regală isn’t suitable for sparkling wines. In Romania, it’s used in blends of wines “with magical bubbles.”

Let me remind you that a bottle of Pét-nat always contains yeast sediment, and the wine isn’t perfectly clear. Therefore, the initial nose has a yeasty note, which then fades. Pét-nat is good because it opens up quickly. The aroma reveals bright Duchesse pear, juicy overripe apricot, almond, cut grape, and fresh fruity sweetness. The taste is a dry wine with almond nuances and aromas of apricot and Duchesse. Its charm lies in the freshness of its aromas. The aroma features almond, dried herbs (though more restrained than the 2019 Feteasca Regală), dried apricot, and grapefruit. The palate reveals almond and grapefruit zest, and the finish is grapefruit.

On the second day, the fruity notes became more pronounced, revealing apple, along with a bouquet of dried wildflowers, honeycomb, and peach pits. This wine became even more interesting on the second day and was enjoyed more than the first. The first nose reveals spicy herbs, with hints of tropical fruit and dried apricot. The texture is delicate and the acidity is excellent. The palate reveals a hint of almond, with a finish of grapefruit zest. Alcohol content: 13%.

On the second day the wine became brighter. Suddenly, grape flowers appeared, as well as tropical fruits, ripe quince, dried apricot, spicy herbs, and a hint of white pepper. Moreover, the aroma of grape flowers has become leading. There was a hint of Duchess pear on the palate. This five-year-old wine surprised me with its brightness and freshness. What’s good about tasting at home is that there is time for wonderful discoveries, which, by the way, in the case of older or aged wines often happen on the second day.

This wine changed my perception and attitude toward the Feteasca Regală grape variety. Before, I hadn’t believed that wine made from it could improve with age. I didn’t expect it to have such staying power, especially in a bottle sealed with a screw cap in April 2017.

Selection Vladlen Uzhakov Feteasca Regală Light Barrique 2020 (Vinum)

And now Feteasca Regală, aged in oak barrels (the winemaker does not disclose the period). In this case – in new, 350-liter, French oak. The wine is light straw color, with a greenish tint, with shine. The first nose is herbs. For the first time in the aroma of Feteasca Regală I encountered a delicate note of dried busuic (basil). It also contains freshness, meadow herbs, ginger, white pepper, ripe apricot. Silky texture, slightly oily; pronounced acidity.

The taste includes spicy herbs and the aroma of basil. In the aftertaste there is a bitterness of herbs. It is not heavy with oak, very harmonious and coherent. Beautiful wine. Its strength is 12.7%. This wine is just entering the market, I tasted it without a label. Along with another sample, it was the last one that came to me after the other wines had been tasted, so they are not in the photo.

Summary

Across the 12 wines tasted, the aromatic profile includes:

Floral: acacia, grape blossom, meadow and garden flowers, jasmine

Herbal

Fruity: citrus (lemon, grapefruit, orange, lime), apricot, peach, apple, quince, Duchess pear, almond; more rarely tropical fruit

Spice: ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, white pepper, honey

Almost all the wines had almonds in their flavor, and very often grapefruit.

Feteasca Regală (a semi-aromatic variety) produces wines with a more intense aroma and fuller body than Feteasca Albă. Because the skins of Feteasca Regală grapes contain more phenolic compounds than other white grapes, these wines are suitable for barrel aging (as evidenced by Romanian wines). The key is not to overdo it with oak. Moldova has little experience in this area, but Fautor (which previously produced it) and Vinum Estate’s current experience confirm this. Romania has experience making Feteasca Regală orange. I haven’t tried it yet, but I imagine such a wine would be interesting if the winemaker handles this variety correctly. I think our winemakers should experiment with this too.

And in the neighboring country, the variety is used there as a base for sparkling wines. In my opinion, by applying Asti technology to it, you can get very trendy wines and good sales.

Where Are the Muscat Notes?

Now, the main question I had while tasting this set was where the muscatel note was in the aroma of Feteasca Regală wines, which old-school winemakers consider a varietal characteristic. I didn’t find it and tried to find an explanation. Incidentally, after reviewing numerous descriptions of Romanian single-varietal wines made from Feteasca Regală, I didn’t find it there either. In my opinion, a muscatel note would make these Feteasca Regală wines appear simpler and more vulgar, like excessive makeup on a woman’s face. And, in my opinion, it’s a good thing it’s not there, especially if we want to sell these wines in the European Union.

Casa Vinicola Luca founder and winemaker Ion Luca commented:

I have no experience producing Feteasca Regală with Muscat notes, nor do I aim to do so. I’ve never associated Feteasca Regală with Muscats or Muscat notes, so I can’t say why the wine doesn’t have Muscat notes. We ferment Feteasca Regală must, like all white grapes, at 16-17°C, and for the last eight years, we’ve been producing Feteasca Regală, where I’ve never detected Muscat notes. I’ve been working with grapes from two vineyards for many years, and the results are consistent.”

Oenologist Ion Prida suggests the lack of Muscat flavor in Feteasca Regală wines stems from its fragility, as the terpenes responsible for its presence are unstable and quickly degrade. Furthermore, since 50-60% of the aromatic compounds are bound to sugars, the enzyme beta-glucosidase is often used at the end of fermentation to release them. This results in a wine with a vibrant aroma even from neutral grape varieties. Without this enzyme, these compounds are released slowly, resulting in a longer-lasting aroma. If they are released all at once, and the terpenes are short-lived, their aromatics in dry wines quickly fade because there is no basis for their regeneration. It’s not for nothing that a “drop” of unfermented sugar is often left in Muscat wines to anchor the aromas.

And another explanation was given by the famous winemaker Viktor Bankov:

Regarding Feteasca Regală, I’m probably on the side of the old-school winemakers. And I wouldn’t rule out a Muscat flavor in wines from Feteasca Regală, as it’s perceived positively by most consumers, especially the fairer sex. After all, it’s a varietal characteristic, and it’s desirable for it to be present in the wine.

However, the winemaker’s chosen style is important. If they deliberately create a wine with a specific aroma from Feteasca Regală, eschewing Muscat nuances, then that’s their prerogative. The main thing is that the resulting wine is interesting and possesses some special aromatic nuances in place of Muscat. Furthermore, the biomaterials and technical capabilities currently available to winemakers allow them to play with the aroma and flavor of the future wine. For example, yeast can produce different variations in aromas, depending on the fermentation temperature alone. It’s also possible to influence the future wine during the extraction of must from the grapes, preparation for fermentation, fermentation, handling of yeast sediment, and so on. So, the technologist’s vision of the future wine is probably the determining factor.”

I can only add that, fortunately, the Feteasca Regala grape variety is quite rich in aromas. Even without muscat notes, its wines do not lose appeal – on the contrary, they gain elegance, particularly when combined with subtle oak aging.

Related articles:

The Feteasca Regală Grape Variety in Moldova

Winemakers of the old school refer to the Feteasca Regală grape as “Muscat Feteasca” due to its perceived muscat notes – and they are accustomed to finding them in the…

Winemakers of the old school refer to the Feteasca Regală grape as “Muscat Feteasca” due to its perceived muscat notes - and they are accustomed to finding them

63,400
6837,6836
post-30682","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-about-moldovan-winemaking","category-wines-en","tag-feteasca-regala","tag-feteasca-regala-wines-in-moldova
["GET
