More than a year and a half has passed since the idea of the Global Medal Wine Rating was born. During all this rather long time the project did not stand still. On the contrary it stubbornly moved towards its goals which at first seemed incredibly distant: a single end-to-end rating of all the world’s wines that received awards at significant professional wine competitions.
We studied the results of 350 professional competition events that took place since 2020 and gathered more than 250,000 medals. The subsequent processing of this information led to the creation of an extensive database of more than 140,000 wines from more than 27,000 producers from 76 different countries of the world. And even the directory of grape varieties quickly grew to more than 1,000 entries.
Now the processing of information on medals awarded during 2020-2021 is coming to an end. The results of calculating the GWMR rating for most of the world’s medal-winning wines are now public GWMR.wine and are being used by many of the participants in the international wine market. The results for 2022 are still in progress and will be ready by the end of the year.
The service offers unique possibilities to filter the wines by a whole set of parameters: Color, CO2, Country of origin, Country Region, Year of harvest, Grape variety, Blend/Single grape composition, Competitions and their event years, Awards and so on.
Each combination of such parameters will generate a list of wines sorted by the GWMR score, thus offering a ready-to-use “Best Choice” rating by your personal interests. You can easily review the personal wine page, see the detailed awards information and even share it on social networks.

The wines can be sorted by a certain wine producer, giving you a complete list of its awarded wines. You can even share a Summary picture for each winery, showing its general successes.
For example, online wine stores are using the GWMR widget to offer clients wine medal information and boost sales. In addition to displaying directly our rating and the latest medals received, the widget optionally displays the Vivino rating.
However, the connection between the wines in our database and their counterparts in the Vivino system is quite a laborious process and will continue for some time. In the future, we are planning the same integration with other rating systems, such as Wine Searcher.
Another good case of usage: The wine importer Réserve des Tsars (France) uses GWMR rating to select its wine portfolio from certain countries.
The second, but much more significant result of the work done was the creation of the Global Wine Medals & Competitions Report containing more than 2000 pages that offer vast statistical data about the global market for wine competitions, medals and awarded wines! The data includes interesting analytics based on:
- By wine Color
- By CO2 (Sparkling/Still wines)
- Grape composition and varieties
- Year of Harvest
- Geography, including:
- All 6 parts of the world
- 33 major wine growing countries of the World.
To understand better the amount of the information the Report offers – please download a FREE sample here.
In addition to the usual report option, it is also possible to order a Personal report for the Winery, where in addition to the full version of the main report there will be a separate personalized file that contains:
- Your indicators as a manufacturer and your place within the World, Continent and Country for a number of parameters.
- The success of your top wines and their place within the World, Continent and Country for each individual wine category.
- Comparative analysis of your performance with the average values within the country and wine region.
There is also an E-Commerce option for wine distributors, retailers and buyers. It has an addition of large data-sheets that offer structured data about all top wine producers and awarded wines (You can sneak peek at the datasheet samples here).
